How are you keeping your employees cool this summer?

Physical comfort in the workplace is the cornerstone of productivity. That’s why investing in employee’s support and comfort in your facility is a no-brainer, creating happier workers and returns in higher employee productivity. It’s also important to note that employers have a duty under section 6 of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSEA 1992) to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees while at work, including providing and maintaining a safe working environment. They also have to identify, assess, eliminate, isolate or minimise significant hazards (sections 7 to 10 of the HSEA 1992). Temperature extremes are a known hazard – from freezing to burning, heat or lack of it can seriously harm people.

Regulation 4 of the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995 requires employers to provide and maintain:

Suitable means of ventilation to provide fresh air
Means of controlling humidity
Means of controlling atmospheric conditions, i.e. temperature, radiant heat, and air velocity.
